Can I upgrade my Drupal 6 website to a Drupal 7 website yet?

Drupal 7 has been out for some time now and a question I get asked is, can I upgrade my Drupal 6 website to Drupal 7 yet? In many cases the answer about upgrading to Drupal 7 depends on the number and complexity of the contributed modules that your website uses. Drupal contributed modules extend on the Drupal core modules and give a Drupal website extra functionality.

Unfortunately there are still some important contribute modules that have not yet had a stable release on Drupal 7, so as of writing and depending on your website requirements then for now the answer maybe it is not time yet to upgrade Drupal.

With thousands of Drupal contributed modules to choose from, always do some research and select modules that are well supported by the Drupal community.

At websitePlus we find that most clients require the features that come from Drupal contributed modules. To help you make a good selection we are going to start tagging posts about resources that have good community support with the recommended for website development tag.

As always comments are welcome and I would be very interested in feedback about modules, themes or website configurations that have strong community support.

Would be helpful to know what features you are struggling with to make Groups in Drupal 7 work effectively.

Groups for Drupal 7 is a complete rewrite of Drupal 6 Organic Groups therefore some stuff is going to be different.

The following is a helpful guide to what is included with Organic Groups in Drupal 7 - http://www.lullabot.com/articles/organic-groups-drupal-7

For a website that uses contributed modules recommend testing

Whilst Drupal 7 core is stable, many of the contributed modules are in various release status.

For a website that uses contributed modules recommend testing to ensure that everything works correctly.

For a complex website plan for a migration instead of an upgrade

First, turn off all unused modules. Also review any feature creep. Remove any functionality that is no longer required.

Second, identify what modules will not be in future version of Drupal then make plan on how to replicate functionality using other modules that will be in future version of Drupal.

Third, regardless of upgrade or content migrate ensure that everything has been well tested on a development server prior to making any changes on a live server.
